Reporting configuration advice requested
Posted in 1999
Hi all, We are currently running Informix Dynamic Server 7.30.UC6 on an IBM J40. This is used for OLTP and batch processes. We have a need for a good reporting system, which is currently satisfied by taking a daily backup of the production database and restoring it to an IBM C10. We did try replication between the two systems, but the C10 could not cope with replication and satisfying user queries, so we had to turn replication off. The number of users on this box has recently increased, and the C10 is not able to complete the users report requests in a reasonable time. Rather than upgrade the C10 box, we are looking into the possibility of replacing it with a good Intel box running Linux and IDS. We could then turn replication back on. The reporting requirement is for 15 concurrent users using Business Objects as a reporting tool. Has anyone any experience of this type of configuration? Are there any problems with replication between AIX and Linux, or is it all irrelevant as IDS deals with it all? What sort of processor/disk configuration would give us good reporting power without breaking the bank? Thanks in advance for any advice.
