You might want to examine the Informix CLI (Call Level Interface). That's supposed to be (more or less) an ODBC implementation. It's available on Unix as well as Windows NT. I am not sure if the asyncronous calls are fully implemented, but the ought to be. I think Openlink (www.openlinksw.com) also have such libraries available.
