SET LOCK MODE range

Hi list, could someone tell me what is the duration of "set lock mode"? In other words, if I place "set lock mode to wait" in a ESQL/COBOL program, after opening the database, is it active until I close the database, or do I have to repeat if each time I do a database call? TIA, David...
