In article <79fe0k$7vt$1@nnrp1.dejanews.com>, petera@unitedgas.co.uk writes >Could anybody tell me the significance of having the owner and group of > 100 >for the user Informix on the AIX box. Currently we are running at uid 7 and >gid 11. > On some early UNIX versions uid's and gid's below 100 were defined for system use. Check the password file and you will find users like sync, bin, daemon,lp these all how uid's and gid's < 100. It think the idea was to allow for the option to get away from a single all powerful root user in future version to make the OS more secure. E.g. why do I need to allow a user root access (read/write any file) when they just need to admin printers, hence the lp user.. >-----------== Posted via Deja News, The Discussion Network ==---------- >http://www.dejanews.com/ Search, Read, Discuss, or Start Your Own -- David Williams
