Re: Cobol To Informix Conversion

In article <3kftcp$kf3$1@mhade.production.compuserve.com>, Peter Land <100522.3377@CompuServe.COM> says: > >I don't see how you could - COBOL is a richer language than 4GL. >Have you considered MicroFocus CST (COBOL/SQL Transparency). This >generates embedded SQL and allows COBOL files to be replaced by >an Informix (or certain other nameless) database, without >changing the original COBOL code. Obviously this is flame-bait... :-) COBOL is a has-been... After having delt with a conversion from a COBOL to INFORMIX data base I can cheerfully report that I'm so glad I don't use COBOL You probably think FORTRAN is a good data base tool too. These products were only brought into mainstream use because THERE WASN'T ANY CHOICE! :-) There IS one amazing thing about COBOL: For all the code you write the executable is rather small. As far as being a "richer" language COBOL is richer in cost--look at how much code you have to write in order to do something simple--and how unproductive programmers are that use it, compared to 4GL. COBOL folk refer to everything as files yet they hate UNIX--which refers to everything as files, and go bonkers when you start talking tables and relational data bases. Yes it's a richer language--a money pit. :-)
