Update statistics...anytime?

Hi All, Can you apply UPDATE STATISTICS to a table at any time? I'm just getting to grips with some in-house developed software at my new compan and as well as improving the backup scripts I was going to perform a bcheck just prior to the backup and then perform an UPDATE STATISTICS after the backup. Does this sound ok to anyone? I don't think any UPDATE STATISTICS has been performed on any table here before. Cheers, Ian. Tedious office-speak part 3: "Let's go scuba in the think tank."
