This is no big deal. Usually the release notes explain the plan including
methods for backing out if there are problems. Here is the quick and
dirty:
1) Install New version software in a SEPARATE directory, this will become
the new INFORMIXDIR after conversion. I install in subdirectories, by
version #, under the Informix home directory, you may prefer the base in
/opt or /var. So 7.24UC2 would be in /home/informix/ifmx7.24UC2 and
7.30UC7 in /home/informix/ifmx7.30UC7. Then, since the minor versions
do not matter, I softlink to a dirname with only the major version and
set INFORMIXDIR to that and install there, ala: ln -s /home/informix/ifmx7.30UC7 /home/informix/ifmx7.30
(When installing bug fix versions I can then just relink the INFORMIXDIR
linkname to the new version's directory and not change any profiles or
crons or startup scripts which a major version upgrade will make me do.)
2) Copy sqlhosts and make a version of your ONCONFIG file in the new
subdirectory adding any new config parameters you want to take advantage
of. All disk related parameters MUST be unchanged from the old ONCONFIG.
3) Take a level zero (0) archive of the database using the current version
(7.24) ontape or onbar. This should be done with the engine in
quiescent mode with no active connections.
4) Shutdown the engine to offline mode.
5) Set INFORMIXDIR to the new software's subdirectory.
6) Start the engine to quiescent mode: oninit -s
7) If all is well bring the new engine online: onmode -m
8) Make sure the sysutils database was converted correctly and make sure
that the sysmaster database, which is dropped and rebuilt, was built
without problems. (There was some version upgrade that trashed sysutils
check the release notes of the new version to be safe and you may want
to unload sysutils first if you use onbar.) If sysmaster had problems
run the buildsmi script again as Informix (you can do this manually with
the engine online even with users logged in!) and that should go fine.
9) Take a level zero (0) archive with the new version (7.30) ontape or
onbar in case the machine crashes before the next scheduled level 0 so
you do not have to restore the 7.24 archive and reconvert.
10) Catch up on any missed data.

Have you tried the Informix web site? Also if you have maintenance they'll usually send you all of the documentation for "free." http://www.informix.com/informix/resource/ids.htm
May I ask if anyone knows on documentation on migrating from 7.24 to 7.30? Currently, I am running this on HP-UX 10.20, but will like to move up to 7.30. Later on, the plan is to move to Informix 7.30 on HP-UX11.0, both on 64 bit. Really appreciate if someone can help to point the way. Thanks Steven

No, CD manuals are not $45US and hard copy manual no longer even ship with product. The hard copy IDS manuals are $750US, ISQL $145US, & SDK $150US. Just ordered a set for the Payroll Dept. you know accountants: if it ain't on paper it don't exist. Art S. Kagel
