Migrate from HP PA-RISC to HP ITANIUM by ontape
Posted in 2008
Question: can IDS data be moved from HP-UX PA-RISC to HP-UX Itanium with ontape, given identical IDS versions? Early replies suggested dbexport/dbimport only, and one poster quoted an IBM PMR claiming endian incompatibility. That was rebutted: Itanium on HP-UX runs big-endian to match PA-RISC, and the IDS 11.10 Itanium machine notes explicitly document PA-RISC-to-Itanium migration, including an in-place/disk-move procedure. Consensus: it works provided both sides run the same IDS release and same 32/64-bit build; other posters confirmed doing it successfully.

I want to know if I can do a migration database'data from
HP PA-RISC to HP ITANIUM by ontape directly? With the identical version of
IDS on these two different platform. Thanks in advance.

I afraid it could not migrate using ontape, cause different platform , CMIIW
I think u should migrate by using dbexport and dbimport

Take a look at the 11.10 IDS Machine Notes - IDS 11.10.FC1, HEWLETT PAC=
KARD
HP-UX Itanium 2
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/idshelp/v111/topic/com.ibm.rel=

It does mention that migration of IDS from HP-UX on a PA-RISC to HP-UX
Itanium is supported, and given step-by-step migration process too.

Last time I asked that question I was told that it couldn't be done on HP-UX.
I found my PMR (PMR 74170,500) and this is the response that I recieved.
"The problem is that in numeric data Itanium (and in all Intel chips) stores
the numbers in a format called Big Endian. What this means is that the MOST
significant digit is stored LAST. So, if you had a hex value like so:
0x00000007 In Big-Endian that number would ACTUALLY be stored like so
0x07000000."
I persisted a little and received this as a follow-up response.
"The Itanium based HP is a different architecture than the RISC based HP. They
are not compatible. You will not be able to move data from one to the other
without some sort of conversion. From Informix's standpoint the only way to
move from one OS (or version IDS) to another is to use the dbexport/dbimport
utilities. If there is some way to convert between Itanium and RISC on the OS
level, you will have to contact HP for instructions."
This conversation took place on 4/20/2007 so it could be possible that IBM's
stance has changed or that the person who answered my questions was not 100%
informed on any caveats that might exist.

Migration from HP-UX-RISC to HP-UX-Itanium can be done InPlace.
We did it and we found, that all you can read in Machine-Notes has to be
regarded (machine notes below)
You have to be in the same architecture regarding 32bit or 64bit and you have
to be on the same informix IDS version
to be able to change from Risc to Itanium. If not, then the engine will come
up, but you'll get errors within the conversion.log
Regards,
gerd
Here the machine notes:
Migrating to this 64-bit Version
================================
1. In addition to supporting migration from previous IBM IDS version on HP-UX
Itanium, this server for the HP-UX Itanium architecture also supports
migration of IBM Informix databases from HP-UX on PA-RISC systems. Please
refer to the IBM Informix Migration Guide.
2. To migrate IBM Informix databases from HP-UX on a PA-RISC system to this
server, the Informix databases on the PA-RISC system should be running
on the same release level of IBM IDS 64-bit or 32-bit servers.
3. The IBM IDS server on PA-RISC is running on a lower release level than this
IBM IDS server on Itanium, then the IBM IDS server on PA-RISC should be
first upgraded to the same IBM IDS release level as this Itanium server
on PA-RISC, before it can be migrated to HP-UX Itanium.
4. The IBM IDS servers on PA-RISC should be running on a HP-UX O/S on which
the IBM IDS has been certified.
The step-by-step migration process
==================================
The process of migrating an IBM IDS database from a PA-RISC system to an
HP-UX Itanium system is described in the section below. The data can be
migrated from the PA-RISC system to HP-UX Itanium system either by moving
the disks containing the data from the PA-RISC system to the HP-UX Itanium
system, or by copying the data from the disks on the PA-RISC system to the
disks on the HP-UX Itanium system. Moving the disks can be achieved by
physically re-cabling the disks from the PA-RISC system to the HP-UX Itanium
system or, as in the case of a disk array, by re-configuring the LUNs to be
visible to the HP-UX Itanium system. Moving the disks to the HP-UX Itanium
system will be generally quicker and easier than copying, but copying has the
advantage of having a back-up on the PA-RISC system. It is expected that the
choice between copy or move be made depending on the customer environment and
their requirements.

It's highly unfortunate that the personnel at IBM is giving out false
information. If you can't trust a response from support then what good are
they. This response prevented us from moving to the Itanium platform, had the
response been accurate then we would most likely be on Itanium today.

One year ago I had the same problem.
If you have identical version IDS
and 64bit PA-RISC migration is OK
Currently I have HP-UX MC/SG and
one machine HP-UX 11.23 PA-RISC 64
bit and HP-UX 11.23 IA connected
to SAN XP array and the same
version IDS , cluster works OK
