If you have a GSM (Global Standard) digital mobile phone, there are several email to SMS (Short Message Service) gateways - I would imagine a similar system exists for pagers (similar technology). We have a shell script run daily by cron that sends the previous days sales figures to marketing/management type people. This scripts checks if each user is in the building by pinging their PC - if the PC is up and running, the figures are sent by email, if not the figures are sent to that user's mobile as SMS via email. The details of which PC to ping, and the mobile phone number are stored in the comments section of /etc/passwd. The list of users to which the figures are sent is the members of a unix group set up for this purpose. Total cost to my company - about a day of my time to write and test the shell script (which they would have paid for anyway!!).
