install informix 11.5 on windows vista
Posted in 2008
Nikita couldn't install IDS 11.50 on Vista Home Premium: the installer failed to set up the IDS Message Service, dbaccess returned error 25580 "socket not connected", and sysmaster failed to build. Advice: run Windows Update/SP1, enable the built-in Administrator account and install as that user, disable UAC, and check the Windows firewall. Enabling the Administrator account fixed the on* tools, and turning off the firewall fixed the connection/sysmaster errors. A later JDBC "connection refused" problem was attributed to the SQLHOSTS entry using *machine_name with Vista's dual IPv4/IPv6 stack (suggest localhost/IP instead); the poster still planned to move to VMware, so that part is unresolved.

Hi guys,
tried to install it for five hours without any success. May be some of you can
help me.
1) During installation got two errors. Last part of log file below:
Copying ICC libraries to gsk\\\\server...
Copying lib\\\\gsk7iccs.dll
Copying icc\\\\icclib\\\\icclib.dll
Copying icc\\\\osslib\\\\libeay32.dll
Configuration file for Instance Manager
...Complete.
initinstance 1 - Failed to set up IDS Message Service as Windows Service
initinstance 2 - IDS Message Service failed to start.
Starting Server Instance
...Complete.
2) Tried to use dbaccess, but failed.
"25580: System error occurred in network function.
Socket not connected"
3) Found report on very similar issue here:
http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=13957078
Tried to reproduce fix, but oninit keep telling me
"could not initialize the security subsystem. Please ensure that this account
has necessary privileges and ensure INFORMIXSERVER value exists in the
registry and environment."
I checked environment variables and registry many times, it's all ok.
Of course, tried to search web for all similar problems. May be someone met
something similar?
Thank you,
Nikita
Hi. I was dealing with the same thing.= My box Windows Vista Ultimate. = - Install Windows - Install Service Pack 1 -= Windows Update - Run Computer Management, Local Users and Groups= , Administrator, uncheck Account Disabled - Log off and log on as= Administrator - Install IDS (without initialize an instance) - Run instance Manager to create your instance. Do you have Administrator privs on the machine? That's likely the problem.
Win users on many commercial sites do not have admin privs.

Thanks, I'll try your way bit later and say how it works. Though I have Vista Home Premium and may be unable to replicate all steps exactly. Nikita
I thought about privileges, but I'm not very big professional in Vista configuration. All I know is... 1) My account is the only presented and has 'administrator' type. 2) UAC is disabled. Are there any other privileges I can grant to myself? Would be grateful if you know. Thank you, Nikita
Try disabling the UAC. I have Vista with the User Access Controls disabled and have had no problems installing on this machine. Hi Nikita,
Please make sure you have run Windows Update and have all the latest patches.
IBM has an open tech support call, and a defect logged for this problem but
the problem only seemed to occur on Windows machines without the latest MS
patches.

Guy

Thanks for your help,

Indeed, everything is up to date. May be problem is that vista home premium is not very popular as platform for enterprise db server. I don't know.
As I said, it's disabled. May be problem is about home premium version only, I don't know.
Hello,
Are you able to ping the service port that you had configured the server?
You can check %WINDIR%\\\\system32\\\\drivers\\\\etc\\\\services file for the
service name that you had used.

Indeed... Vista Home Premiun SUCK ! ... big time. From a programmer point of view (that want to play with Informix, for example), Home Premium lack a lot of functionality you are usually used to if you came from Xp-Pro. And it doesn't help much Informix hasn't been tested very well on this beast. With a lot of effort as you did, *someone* can install IDS on vista HP, but to me it is discouraging at best. I think I'll finally go to vmware, since I need to complete job somehow. Today my admin and informix accounts suddenly disappeared, I guess it was a sign :) And I really don't understand what's so difficult about creating proper tcp/ip socket listener. If IBM guys unable to accomplish this task with billion-dollars budget, I can do it 100 times cheaper :) And it will work on any decent Windows version, from now and till 2050. IBM sucks.

Of course I'd be happy to do it with Oracle, MySQL or MSSQL, great products. If only I could choose client's environment.
I have IDS 11.50TC1 running on Vista upgraded from closed Beta days. The only problems I've had was a four week period between two Vista upgrades when the engine either wouldn't start automatically or I could not connect to it. Either way, during this period, stopping the instance from a Cygwin shell and restarting it manually from there using nohup resolved the problems. Then my machine updated it's windows again (I think that was the SP1 upgrade, not sure) and the engine wouldn't start at all for 3 days, then without fanfare it just started working again. That was three weeks ago and it's been fine since. Odd and inconsistent but it works for me. Art On Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 5:08 PM, Jean Sagi <jeansagi.ifx@gmail.com> wrote: > Indeed... Please note Vista Home anything is not a supported or tested platform. However 1. Vista Business, Ultimate and Enterprise are supported and tested, and 2. there is no reason IDS shouldn't work fine on Vista Home as long as the Administrator account is enabled, you make sure the firewall is not preventing access to the listening port, and make sure the SQLHOSTS entry matches what you are connecting to. This last point is important for Vista because it has a dual IPV4 and IPV6 stack. If I remember rightly the default SQLHOSTS entry for the demo instance in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\\\Software\\\\Infomrix\\\\SQLHOSTS\\\\<NFORMIXSERVER> is set to *machine_name in 11.50.TC1. This can cause problems because the machine might resolve the IPV6 name and the client might resolve the IPV4 name. I suggest you chance it to localhost if the client is on the same machine, or to machine_name is the client is remote, or just IP address, if the client also connects by IP address, and make sure you restart IDS. In IDS 11.50.TC2 the leading * in the servername in SQLHOSTS won't be used.
