IDS 10.00 maximum concurrent sessions
Posted in 2010
The poster asked what the "maximum concurrent" figure in onstat -u means and how to limit/track session counts for licence compliance. Art Kagel explained it is simply the high-water mark of concurrent sessions since startup/stats reset, not a limit; network (TCP/DRDA) connections are unbounded since poll threads allocate more slots, while shared-memory (ipcshm) connections are capped by NETTYPE (poll threads x slots). Current sessions can be counted with SELECT COUNT(*) FROM sysmaster:syssessions excluding informix/pid=0 rows. Richard Snoke added that for licensing on IDS 10 the official counter is sh_ovlmaxcons in sysmaster:sysshmvals.

Hello,
onstat -u provides us with the maximum concurrent sessions.for e.x. 8 active, 128 total, 18 maximum concurrent.
I would like to know how to arrive at maximum concurrent sessions,
rather from where IDS calculates this number (18).
Thanks in advance,
Bala
The 'maximum concurrent' number isn't a limit calculation, it is reporting
what the maximum number of concurrent sessions the engine experienced since
the stats were last zero'd out (or since startup). Unless your server's
only connection type is shared memory (ipcshm) there is no maximum number of
concurrent sessions limitation.

Hi Art, Thanks for your quick respose. We are using shared memory connections . Also noted that there is no limit for the concurrent sessions. My issue is i want to control the number of sessions, i.e. maximum number of concurrent sessions. Say for ex i dont want the maximum number of concurrent sessions to go above 50. Is there any method where in i can do a lookup in the sysmaster database and find out the numebr of current concurrent sessions. If yes then I can take it from there. Thanks once again... Bala
First, you CAN limit the number of concurrent shared memory connections.
Since the communications blocks that shared memory connections use and the
semaphores that protect them are allocated when IDS starts up, the number of
available connections via shared memory is fixed at startup by the NETTYPE
ipcshm setting. The limit is the product of the number of poll threads
configured and the number of connection slots per poll thread. So, for
example, in this configuration:
NETTYPE ipcshm,2,25,CPU
There are two poll threads (one in each of the first two CPU VPs) each of
which manages 25 shared memory slots for concurrent connections. It is the
network protocol connections which are unlimited as they can be, and are,
increased on the fly by the network poll threads. So while this
configuration:
NETTYPE tlitcp,2,100,NET
NETTYPE drda,2,100,NET
Allocates 2 poll threads for SQLI (Informix native communication protocol)
TCP/IP connections each with 100 connection slots, and 2 poll threads for
IBM's DRDA protocol TCP/IP connections each with 100 connection slots, if
10000 users were to suddenly connect to the IDS instance via either
protocol, the poll threads would simply allocate more internal memory slots.
As far as managing or counting the number of connections, you can:
SELECT COUNT(*)
FROM sysmaster:syssessions
WHERE NOT (username = 'informix' OR pid = 0);
The username and pid filter will keep you from counting the internal engine
sessions.

Hi Art, Understood and thanks a lot. Rgds Bala
Hi Art,
This is in continuation to the thread.
I am trying to control my maximum number of concurrent sessions so that I am
always compliant with the avaliable licence.
I shall be obliged if you could let me know as to how IDS 10.00 concurrent
sessions licence are calculated . Which onstat commands are used to arrive at
the maximum concurrent licence . In short I would like to know the method used
to calculate the concurrent sessions licences.
thanks in advance,
Bala
Responded offline. Let me know to my email address if you did not get that.

Hi Art, Received with thanks and posted the reply back. Rgds Bala
Hi,
For IDS 10, the max sessions you must license can be found by
select sh_ovlmaxcons from sysmaster:sysshmvals;
That counter is the official data to determine license requirements.
