HELP!! System Lockup

I have a DECStation 5000/240. There are about 7 to 10 users logged on during the day and several cron jobs running also. The machine has 32MB of memory and 2 450MB hard drives. The OS is ULTRIX 4.3 and the database is Informix SE. We experience a situation intermittently where you cannot su to root unless you are at the console and if you enter the Informix DBAccess program, your session will lockup after you select a database. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!! Thank You!!!
