Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
Martin Gebert got 'could not fork server connection Program over' running ontape -s -L 0, though tar to the streamer worked. Anil Karkera suggested checking the Informix message log, which showed nothing. Art S. Kagel said the OS process limit may be too low, and asked whether the engine was offline, since ontape needs Quiescent or Online mode. Unresolved.

Hi everybody
When I try to make a backup of our database with
"ontape -s -L 0"
I get the answer :
"could not fork server connection
Program over."
What did I wrong.
The streamer is working very well with tar.
There is no help available for this error message in any
informix documentation.
Thanks in advance
Martin

Martin, you seem to be having a configuration problem
on your server, look into the Informix message log for
some more error messages.

There is no error message in any message file!

Many UNIXes limit the number of concurrent processes and children that
can be started. Check your server configuration to see of this parameter
is set too low.
Another possibility: I know this is dumb stuff, but getting all the dumb
stuff
out of the way keeps us from beating our heads against the wall. Is this
an offline archive (ie is the engine offline?) Ontape requires the engine
to be in Quiescent or Online mode.
