INFORMIX Internals: tbtape improvement

Hi IO-gurus, I would like to check my backup tapes, so I could verify the basic information about the tapes before I use it in a restore situation. Does anyone have a utility for that OR know if INFORMIX does OR know about the structure of those first bytes on a tape so I can write my own. The utility should almost do the same as tbtape -r, but without any actual RESTORE.... I would be interested in V5.0X and V7.1 versions. P.S: This weekend I had to restore 28 Gb database - from 5 level 0 tapes, and 1 level 1 tape.
