As Jonathan correctly points out you have to install the 7.xx environment in a different directory from the 5.xx software and set up a complete 7.xx runtime environment as if you were on a serverless client setting up to connect to a remote 7.xx server on another machine. It does work I do it all the time to convert a machine from 5->7. I convert the apps to 7.xx first, with minimal mods, and after testing install the 7.xx apps to run against the 5.xx engine. > I also spoke to Informix Tech Support and they told me that this SHOULD be > doable and without doing anything at all special. You can use makefiles. Just use esql do any linking it is a) easier and b) better because Menlo cannot seem to refrain from moving functions between libraries, adding and dripping libraries, and moving the library files around the directory structure between versions. If you use esql to link you will not have to muck with the makefile everytime you upgrade. > So, I have two Informix reps contradicting each other! And how did he suggest that you create a runtime environment? Unless you have the 7.xx engine installed along with 7.xx ESQL/C? Then you have the equivalent of CONNECT already installed. Perhaps that is what he meant. > Can you please tell me exactly what it is you accomplished with respect to > Informix 7 and Informix 5 and how, exactly, you accomplished it? I just install the 7.xx engine, link the shared libraries into /usr/lib (I prefer that to using LD_LIBRARY_PATH which works fine also), create the appropriate sqlhosts entries in the 7.xx $INFORMIXDIR/etc, set INFORMIXSERVER to the name of the 5.xx server, INFORMIXDIR to the 7.xx installation and poof! Everything works. You can only use network connections, shared memory will not work, but the 7.xx apps still run faster than the 5.xx apps did for me at least. > Since you are in New York, and I am just across the river, I would be happy > to pay you a vist if you are willing and if it would be helpful in solving > our problem. I cannot do that. Security, we have trading systems and proprietary and sensitive data. Sorry. Art S. Kagel, kagel@bloomberg.net
