Table creation

Greetings, Please forgive me if this question requires me to RTFM, but I've dug through them and I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. I need to give several users permission to create temporary tables. I will not know ahead of time what the table names will be and they will be deleted when the user disconnects from the application. Maybe part of my question revolves around what exactly does "grant resource" allow a user to do? Does it give them permission to make modifications to a table owned by another user? If it does, how do I grant the permissions required for temporary table creation without giving them resource privileges? Thanks for your time and patience (with a beginner) Mike Badar ESRI-Denver 1 International Court Broomfield, CO 80021-3200 303-449-7779 mbadar@esri.com www.esri.com
Mike, Informix behaves differently than most other RDBMS platforms when it comes to temp tables. I don't believe that you need any permission (other than connect) to create a temp table, and all temp tables are deleted on the termination of the creating session from the database. Further, temporary tables can only be referenced by the session that creates them, so you have to be a little careful with multi-threaded applications. Granting resource allows users to create permanent tables, indexes, other objects in the database. It doesn't allow them to modify other users' objects, but in general, I don't recommend granting users permission to create permanent objects on production systems. Far better (unless the business practice dictates otherwise) to allow them to create temp tables, and do their work that way. I hope that gives you the answers you're looking for; if not, I'm sure that someone else will throw their two cents in. Thanks.
