Informix Java API <---> JDBC?

We are looking for a JDBC-driver for Informix and came across the "Informix Java API" in the cd-rom INFORMIX CLIENT PRODUCTS VERSION 2.0 FOR MICROSOFT WINDOWS ENVIRONMENTS DATE: 11/7/97 Can any one explain to me how this compares to "standard JDBC"? What will I lose/win by using this interface. Is the Java API 100% Java? Is it in any way compatible with JDBC? We are using Informix Online Server 7.23 with Windows NT 4.0.
