It is easy to print barcodes from 4GL reports, provided you have a printer with a barcode font. We have HP Laserjets with the "Barcodes and More" font cartridge, but I think you can do that with any other barcode-enabled printer. To make the printer switch to the barcode font, you have to send it a control string with the appropriate commands. For Laserjets, this control string starts with the ESC character. You can print that with "ASCII 27". So in your report, you do: PRINT ASCII 27, "<whatever_the_rest_of_your_control_string_is>" This works in ACE as well.
