Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
Frank asked whether inserting into an external table overwrites existing contents and how to keep rows. Art Kagel confirmed it overwrites and suggested renaming the underlying file and touching a new empty one between writes. Everett Mills suggested loading old data into a temp table and writing it back with the new data. Frank thanked both.

Hi,
It seems inserting into a external table will overwrite its existing
contents, correct? Can we avoid this( i.e., keep existing rows)?
Thanks, Frank

CORRECT. One option: Rename the underlying file and touch a new empty one
between writes to the external table.

If the data's not too big you can load the old data into a temp table and dump
it back to the external table with the new data you're writing.
