Informix OLE DB still need ODBC? (URGENT!)

hi, i'm workign with informix and vb6. i know informix client sdk 2.30 offers an OLE DB provider. but i'm not quite sure about the tech behind. does that ole db provider directly communicate with informix database or it is just an old story - using odbc but adding an extra dumy layer on top of it? i'm a bit confused about it. i heard some say it still needs an odbc driver and some say this ole db can bypass odbc. which one is true? thanx very much! rgds, thenard Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know. If you want to use Informix with the supplies that come with VB6, you will still be using ODBC. OLE DB only provides an object-oriented wrapper to lower-level db access. In principle, someone could write a OLE DB provider which accesses Informix directly. However, it certainly doesn't come with VB6. You would have to ask the folks at Informix whether something like that exists. I suspect not, since there would be very little motivation for writing it. ODBC is already there, and despite its flaws it would take a massive amount of work to improve upon it. buskirk@msn.com Thenardier <thenardier@zdnetmail.com> wrote in message news:7qls0c$dfi$1@nnrp1.deja.com... > > > hi, > > i'm workign with informix and vb6. i know informix client sdk > 2.30 offers an OLE DB provider. but i'm not quite sure about > the tech behind. does that ole db provider directly communicate > with informix database or it is just an old story - using odbc > but adding an extra dumy layer on top of it? > > i'm a bit confused about it. i heard some say it still needs > an odbc driver and some say this ole db can bypass odbc. which > one is true? > > thanx very much! > > > rgds, > thenard > > > Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ > Share what you know. Informix OLE DB provider is a native provider and has nothing to do with ODBC.
