One reason is that these "native" drivers, which should realy be called proprietary drivers, by now aren't any more direct in their database connection than good ODBC drivers. The better ODBC drivers generaly bypass the proprietary drivers from the vendors. Even those that do not doesn't necessarily add much that is releavant to speed. >Or maybe there is a way to do these types of things easier in ODBC. You can do anything via ODBC by using passthrough SQL statements which are easy in VB. >If anyone has any books or resources on how to get more controll out of >INFORMIX from VB, please let me know. Any good book on database programming that talks about client/server database solutions (not the MS Access variety) should help you out. You should however also read about the different database access methods in VB and their features on the MS web site. It used to be that DAO, which is used for MS Access work, wasn't any good for client/server solutions. A direct to ODBC implementation did however come along some time ago that made it more or less as good as the others. Then there is RDO which have been the best solution for some time. Now Microsoft wants us to use ADO which according to rumours will be the only solution in VB 6. Those rumours also say that it doesn't have scrolling cursors and some other features you might want. I don't follow these things as I used to any longer as we are now more interested in Java which is such a superior technology. For most purposes it leaves VB in the dust as it does for some other similar tools. I do assume you read Visual Basic Programmers Journal. Anyone using VB half seriously simply have to read that magazine. Some time ago they told you all you might have wanted to know about database access. The magazine is interesting (for a time at least) even for programmers who don't use VB. It shows a lot about what is and can be done in MS Windows programming.
