We use SCCS, but we have the same problem. We use something like let ivar = length ( "%Z% %M% %I% %G% %U%" ) towards the front of each I4GL program. This has the advantage of not requiring you to figure out how long the expanded string will be before-hand or define a wastefully large char variable. This method has the drawback of putting a useless executable statement in the module. Having one at the front of a large program isn't that bad. Having such a statement in a function that is called many times is unacceptable, so we don't do it in library functions and other stand-alone routines that will be called frequently. The scheme is not perfect, but suits our needs. I'd also like to hear about other solutions.
