DB2 magazine / Informix Connextion
Posted in 2004
A discussion thread, not a technical problem. Neil Truby noted that IBM's Q3 2004 DB2 Magazine carried an "InformixConnection" pull-out (letter from Janet Perna, IDS 9.4 TCO/performance, IIUG feature, WebSphere integration) and welcomed Informix-specific coverage. Others were less impressed, calling the insert a thin afterthought and disputing its claim that WebSphere Studio 5.1.2/EGL lets 4GL apps be extended to the web. Also noted: IDS 7.31 end-of-service pushed to September 2009 (EOM 2008), good for customers though awkward for partners who had pushed migration to v9, since many sites don't need 9.4's extra features. No resolution — it's commentary, not a problem thread.

I received my Quarter 3 2004 copy of "DB2 magazine" today. I think it may be a little out of date, as I seem to remember discussion of it a month or two back. But it's a publication aimed squarely at the American market, with almost all the advertising so directed, so it probably doesn't matter too much to the advertisers if it arrives later in other regions. All the main features ("What's in a name?: The Story Behind Stinger" ; "Doing More with More: The Lastest features of DB2 UDB are Brimming ...." ; "Totally RAD : With all the enhancements to DB2 UDB ..." ; "Brewing up Stronger Jana Support: Improvements to the DB2 JDBC Driver in DB2 UDB ...") are exclusively about DB2 UDB rather than DB2 the brand. However Informix is not completely neglected, and there is a central pull-out entitled 'InformixConnection - The Big Leagues" with, as its title suggests, a baseball (I think) or maybe American Football theme. Anyway there's reasonable stuff in it: An open letter from Janet Perna, manager of IBM DB2 Inf Management Sys; an article about IDS 9.4, its TCO and performance; a feature on the IIUG; an article about Informix's integration into other IBM products such as Websphere; and an advert for a reseller. It is refreshing to see IBM publishing Informix-specific material: let's hope the trend continues!

I don't know if you guys have seen this but talking about specific informix things or material I think it is a good signal, isn't it? http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/informix/ids/731-eos.html "Neil Truby" <neil.truby@ardenta.com> wrote in message news:<2q5pjvFr4n7kU1@uni-berlin.de>... > I received my Quarter 3 2004 copy of "DB2 magazine" today. Not a single mention of Informix, anywhere, whatsoever. >, and there is a central pull-out entitled > 'InformixConnection - The Big Leagues" And the fact that it shows all the attributes of afterthought is of course coincidental (only 5 pages of info, which is mostly a rehash of the 2003 whitepaper with no real new stuff. Nice plug for the IIUG, though.)... > Anyway there's reasonable stuff in it: IMHO, not > An open letter from Janet Perna, > manager of IBM DB2 Inf Management Sys; an article about IDS 9.4, its TCO and > performance; a feature on the IIUG; an article about Informix's integration > into other IBM products such as Websphere; and an advert for a reseller. > A BIIIIIIIIIG, HUUUUUUUUGE juicy bone to pick here; to pick up on a previous thread re Websphere/4GL. The article *specifically* states: "Beginning with WebsShere Studio 5.1.2 products ... Informix 4GL is a subset of WebSphere's EGL language ... WebSphere Syudio 5.1.2 lets Informix shops extend 4GL applications to the web by writing new applications that leverage their existing 4GL skills". No it bloody well doesn't (see my posts passim). > It is refreshing to see IBM publishing Informix-specific material: let's > hope the trend continues! Hope they start publishing useful and correct information, too.

Anyway, there are a lot of new features in 9.4 that you haven't got in 7.31 and that would help to move customers from 7 to 9. esteban.- esteban.-

Obviously my comment was mainly tongue-in-cheek, and yes of course it is excellent news for customers, and as such was very strongly advocated to IBM by the IIUG. Taking off my IIUG hat and donning instead my resellers' one for a moment, there is a grain of truth in the assertion that the direct sales team and business partners have been encouraged up until now to promulgate the "Migrate!" message. But all in all I agree that this is a very positive move. > Anyway, there are a lot of new features in 9.4 that you haven't got in > 7.31 and that would help to move customers from 7 to 9. Now - remember I still have my resellers' hat on here so I know what a large number of customers think - this has been a very difficult argument to put across. It is undoubtedly true that there are a lot of new features in v9.4 but unless you plan to use them - and in my experience most customers *don't* use databalades, user-defined data types etc etc - the argument to move is not in fact that compelling.
