We have a NIS server (ypbind and ypserv) running on an RS6000 (Aix 3.2)
and a HP9000 (HPUX ?) running ypbind (binding to the RS6000). Our problem
is the HP9000. When we try to run isql we get the error -468, which is:
Cannot obtain user id from system: unable to start database server.
Your application is trying to open communications to a database
server. As part of doing this it has to read your user id from
the system passwd file, and it failed to do this. Look for operating
system error messages that may give more specific information. Consult
with a system administrator to make sure the file of user ids is
readable to all users.
For some reason, Online is looking in /etc/passwd for the user id's
instead of using system calls which would allow it to work with NIS. If
we add the user to the HP's passwd file, it works. However, this is not
really how we want to handle this. We would prefer to be consistent and
administer passwd through NIS.
If anyone knows of a way to make Online work with NIS, or any other
pertinent information, please let me know.
