HDR replication setup on Windows
Posted in 2014
Larry asked for detailed instructions and gotchas for setting up HDR between IDS 11.70 servers on Windows 2008, coming from a UNIX/Linux background, plus what admin utilities exist on Windows. Replies: Windows has most of the usual binaries (onstat, onparams, onspaces, dbaccess, etc.) but no onmonitor (which Art Kagel says shouldn't be used after 7.31 anyway as it can corrupt the ONCONFIG). David wrote up a Windows 11.70 install/HDR setup guide at smooth1.co.uk and listed real pitfalls: an informix password failing Windows complexity rules silently fails to create the account, services then can't be created, uninstalls leave components/registry keys behind, and cloned VMs with duplicate hostnames break things. Paul Watson said it works if you follow the instructions and suggested using a local user account. No single formal resolution is recorded beyond those pointers.

I know that I have asked a related question a while ago, but I have lost all of my old e-mails. Does anyone know of any great, detailed instructions for installing and setting up HDR replication to a secondary on Windows 2008? IDS 11.70.FC3 I have done this a lot in UNIX and Linux environments, but Windows environments are a different story. I know that there are some good write-ups for UNIX that have pretty detailed instructions. Are there any that detailed for Windows? So, any detailed instructions, comparisons between the setup on Windows and UNIX (setup on Windows for UNIX admins), etc. would be greatly appreciated. Also, any gotchas that anyone has experienced setting up their own Windows environments would be valuable as well. Thanks. Larry
A followup question is:
I am used to having utilities such as dbaccess, onmonitor, onparams, etc. on
UNIX/Linux servers. What can I expect in a Windows environment to perform the
same functions?

On windows you don't have onmonitor. Not sure what else is missing, most of the usual suspects are there I think. Here is directory listing of executables in 'bin' folder with version 11.70FC5GE, maybe this helps you: archecker.exe blademgr.exe cdr.exe connectTest.exe copyboot.exe creates.exe dbaccess.exe dbexport.exe dbimport.exe dbload.exe dbschema.exe deletes.exe DocViewer.exe drdaprint.exe dsnMigrate.exe finderr.exe GenMacKey.exe genoncfg.exe ifxclone.exe ifxcollect.exe ifxdeploy.exe ifxdeployassist.exe ifxnmpcfg.exe ilogin.exe infoshp.exe inssnmp.exe instmgr.exe ixpasswd.exe ixsu.exe loadshp.exe msgserv.exe ntchname.exe ntmail.exe onaudit.exe onbar_d.exe oncheck.exe onclean.exe oncmsm.exe ondblog.exe oninit.exe onload.exe onlog.exe onmode.exe onparams.exe onpassword.exe onpladm.exe onpload.exe onrestorept.exe onscpah.exe onshowaudit.exe onsmsync.exe onsnmp.exe onspaces.exe onsrvapd.exe onstat.exe ontape.exe onunload.exe regcdrcl.exe regcopy.exe setnet32.exe set_error.exe sqliprt.exe starts.exe txbsapswd.exe unloadshp.exe vcredist.exe vcredist_x64.exe wblademgr.exe xfault.exe xtrace.exe Regards, Bryce Stenberg.
Just an aside: Onmonitor is gone altogether BTW and should not be used anyway in any version after 7.31. It can trash you ONCONFIG file. Art Art S. Thank you for the response. I was beginning to wonder if there was anyone out there running Informix on Windows. I know that I normally run it on UNIX/Linux. Is there anyone with experience setting up HDR on Windows that can mention some gotchas that I should look out for? I have spent the last 6 hours since updating the FAQ wreslting with Informix on Windows. I have update the cross product Database product installation FAQ at http://www.smooth1.co.uk/installs/dbinstalls.html#3.2.1 with how to: - install Informix 11.70 on Windows - setup HDR between 11.70 servers on Windows including connectivity between the Informix servers on Windows 2008R2 and VMWare 10 Regards, David. > On 28 August 2014 at 12:30 "david@smooth1.co.uk" <david@smooth1.co.uk> wrote: > > > Added to the FAQ! > > Regards, > David. > > > On 28 August 2014 at 11:47 Art Kagel <art.kagel@gmail.com> wrote: > > > > > > Just an aside: Onmonitor is gone altogether BTW and should not be used > > anyway in any version after 7.31. Not many people run Informix on Windows. After all - https://muse.jhu.edu/journals/ieee_annals_of_the_history_of_computing/toc/ahc.35 .2.html Informix: Information Management on Unix! The hard bit was installation and getting connectivity between the 2 servers: When installing I gave an informix password which did not match the Windows password complexity requirements. The installer gave no error even though the informix account was not created, that needs to be fixed. Using the server manager to create a server worked until trying to launch the server when it kept asking for the informix password over and over again as it could not create a service. The error mentioned sync with PDC even though I am using a workgroup although it did mention password complexity rules as well! Manually adding the Informix user and putting it the the correct groups did not fix the issue. cancelling and reruning the instance manger made no difference. Uninstall and reinstall time! On the subject of the uninstall, it did not work took ~5 attempts before I hunted down zapping all the following before I could get the install to work, this needs fixing as well. Add/remove programs includes several items not just 1. Uninstalling the bundle did not - remove JDBC,Client SDK and IBM Informix 11.70.FC8 from Add/Remove Programs even though they were gone - uninstall Blade Manager - uninstall GSKit - unstall Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2005 and 2008 - remove all of C:\\\\Program Files\\\\IBM - remove all registry keys from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\\\Software\\\\Informix - shouldn' that be \\\\IBM\\\\Informix buy now? - removed services for the server I installed using sc delete. When I realized that both VM's I cloned had the same hostname and changed the hostname nothing worked. Installing a server mentioned failure to create a service again - reinstall time again! How do you handle 1. Changing the Informix password. 2. Changing the hostname The installer needs to have a repair option which fixes informix user/password and can reinstall services to handle a hostname change.
