Finocchio mentioned at a press conference in New York that Informix needs to do a better job of marketing than it did in the past. The company must do better with channel distribution, and it must make it easier to develop data blades for its high-end object relational database management system. Informix also hired a whole new management team including new financial, marketing and sales executives. The company surprised Wall Street at the end of 1997 by reporting a profit, which was not expected until much later this year, if at all. (John T. Mulqueen, 5/7/98) INFORMATIONWEEK "Informix Refocuses Sales and Marketing Strategies" At a media luncheon in New York, Informix CEO Bob Finocchio said that Informix would start focusing more of its efforts on marketing. One way to reach this goal is to focus on shorter, one year contracts instead of multiple year contracts. He plans to deal with them one year at a time. (Joy D. Russell, 5/6/98) PCWEEK ONLINE "Informix To Take Aim At High-end Web, NT Applications" According to Bob Finocchio, Informix's CEO, marketing is one of the areas where the company needs to do better. The company reported a profit for the first quarter and Finocchio attributes that to keeping tighter control on expenses, a new management team and product upgrades. Finocchio stated that the biggest single driver for database sales are organizations implementing packaged enterprise solutions. He believes that IT departments will turn their attention to the web and that will become the biggest driver. Informix also bases its growth on providing software for building data marts and data warehouses and counts on growing its Windows NT business. However, Informix is not likely to compete directly against Microsoft in the NT market. (John S. McCright, 5/7/98) Additional Coverage: COMPUTERWORLD "Informix To Take Another Crack At NT" (Craig Stedman, 5/98) COMPUTERWORLD "Informix Shoots For Win NT Users Via Channels" Informix plans on taking a stab at jumping into the NT market through resellers and software vendors. According to Bob Finocchio, Informix's CEO, the company's main priority is a beefed-up incentive program aimed at getting more firms to support its database. Although Informix is slower to embrace the Windows NT platform, it doesn't lack NT products. However it doesn't hold a large share of the NT market. Its sales were about $50 million. With Microsoft shipping its new version of SQL Server, Informix is running out of time to become a serious contender in the NT marketplace. However, Finocchio said there are "real dollars being committed now." It is focusing on high-performance applications in data warehousing, the world wide web and content management. (Craig Stedman 5/11/98) LAN TIMES "Dynamic Server From Informix" Informix released a new version of Informix Dynamic Server with an upgrade to the Advanced Decision Support Option. Many programmers are looking to server programming and new technologies as alternatives to Java applets and ActiveX controls. Because of universal database servers, the next controversy will likely be whether web pages should be managed as files by the operating system or as a database content by DBMS. Informix AppPages are mentioned as having special tags and embedded SQL queries and are stored on the Informix database. Also mentioned is the Informix Dynamic Server with the Universal Data Option. Informix Dynamic Server supports plug-in modules, known as DataBlades, that install new features and types. You can also install a Web DataBlade for storing Web pages in the database.
