I have a dbexport from Informix Turbo crashing out with a memory
allocation error. It only happens on one table, the largest approx 18
GB, most of which is blob data. I also have all 32 chunks in use and
can't allocate anymore (known Turbo bug)
# The limitation is not 32 chunks, it is the 2K page size of the chunk
names page. On our site before we upgraded we could only get about 34
chunks. What we did was instead of having a chunk name /dev/dsk/c3t4d1
we had /a and symbolically linked it using unix. This provided us with 6
extra chunks.
A truss output for the export confirms that there is a ENOMEM error
being produced at a brk() call in the code. I believe I've tried all
the obvious things eg
Added 256 MB RAM to the box (originally 128)
Up'd SHMMAX from 512000 (ish) to 4096000 (ish)
Up'd ULIMIT from 64000 (ish) to 1000000 (ish)
No errors are being reported in the message areas both for Unix and
Informix.
# You are going to have to find a way of splitting the table. Is there
any fields with a field type like date or serial that you could use to
split the data ?
BTW the export needs to be done at the weekend so the data can be
reorganised or else
the site will be out of space by Monday.
# If you use the symbolic link method, you should be able to add at
least two chunks before the weekend if you have the physical disk.
Informix say you should be able to have 50 chunks in version 5, however
they didn't tell everyone you need to have short chunk names.
Anybody got any ideas, and yes I know that nobody anywhere still uses
Turbo 'cos its *@*(!!.
TIA
# I hope this helps you in your hour of need...
Cheers, Tony.
