We are using i.sell. I haven't been able to find any great documentation on it myself, ATG has online documentation, but to access it I believe you have to purchase Dynamo from them. As far as batch processing goes, you do not have to go through the application server for that. In fact, I don't know of any advantages of going through the application server. I will add the disclaimer that I am not a Java programmer and have only been involved in the tuning of the application server and the SQL the application server uses to access the database.
