It sounds like Oracle is doing a better job for you then Informix. My apologies - your note sounded like you were just starting in an Informix environment and having what I would consider normal growing pains. When working for a long period of time in one environment we tend to develop algorithms that work well in that environment but which don't translate well to another. Hence my question about why you care about trailing spaces. Maybe it is the algorithm itself you should be looking at and not the LIKE statement. I assume that you have already received Doug Wilson's post with it's suggestion - which I have not tried so I can't vouch for it.
