Actually google does know how to handle (assuming you think wikipedia is worthwhile) - 'what is informix' which is a likely question asked by any management types or IBM sales :> You would have thought Wikipedia would be a bit more up to date though. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Informix Mind you, perhaps the questions should have been - what is informix dynamic server - of course... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_Informix_Dynamic_Server Again, It's 11.70 but enterprise, workgroup, express editions! Sigh IBM marketing, I'll forever be unemployed. OK, that's my catch up on the Informix forum for the year.
I was going to let this slide because I've been really busy building very large Data Warehouses in Hadoop and HBase... (TB and PB size...) [Yes, one POC is a PB in size. ] Don't see that happening w DB2, although now that they've added a column oriented database and their analytics group based in Chicago, maybe they'll feed DB2 from Hadoop. Informix? Not so much. Customers running SAP on IDS? (Outch! yeah that still hurts considering what... only 1 customer in the US migrated from IDS to DB2?) Customers running Peoplesoft on IDS? (Well I didn't track this but Sears did move Peoplesoft on to DB2..) And then if the Recruiters at Sears know what they're talking about... they migrated off IDS and on to MySQL... So Sears appears to be off IDS completely. (Oh and they do have a production system on Hadoop and are making a commitment to Hadoop.) Do we know who's OEMing IDS? I know of a couple of companies but ones like Moto aren't shipping as many units. Cisco appears to be doing ok. Lets also take a look at user group activity. The local Hadoop User Group in Chicago is less than a year old, has over 150 members and holds meetings once a month. Local IDS group? Once a quarter? (Controlled by IBM who ran the meeting in to the ground... but that's just my opinion. ;-) (I could list some of the member companies, but you can always find that out quick enough.) How many books on the topic? There are two main Hadoop books, however there's a third on the way, and two more in the works. (Including HBase...) IDS? Not counting 'Red Books' from IBM press. How many are currently in print? Looking at mailing lists. Hadoop, HBase, Hive, Cloudera all have very active mailing lists. IDS? Not so much. What's being taught in Schools? Not IDS. Hadoop? You betcha. Now this is all very interesting and you'll argue that its again off topic. But not so fast... You seem to miss the larger picture in terms of data trends. With cheap 'Off the Shelf' 'commodity hardware' being cheap, one can build a reasonable POC warehouse for under 100K. IDS/DB2/Oracle licensing for same size POC... 10x that. (Yeah, seriously) So if we look at what companies are doing... they are currently investigating and investing in Hadoop ala 'Big Data / Big Table' technologies. IBM? They tried to stick their toe in the water. Emerging Tech running their paper through IM on Hadoop projects. Unfortunately, Cloudera support is cheaper, better support and knowledge base, and they freely give away a viable distribution. IBM? They want to ship a 32bit version on IBM's 32Bit JVM. (Kind of silly when everyone is running 64Bit hardware and OS. Also it makes for interesting Jira reports.) Being nice, suppose IDS isn't losing licenses due to defections, but has net 0 gain. What does that mean if the overall larger information management marketplace is growing at a decent clip? (It means that IDS is becoming less relevant overall.) Peter raised the point of being unemployed. Look at the job postings... (Including IBM's Information Management) Where having experience w Hadoop, HBase, Hive means work. Informix? Not so much. But then again, what do I know? I still use IDS for one set of customers in a very specific niche. And that's the point. IDS is relegated to a niche now. Or 'legacy' apps. -G PS. Fernando, don't shoot the messenger. IBM had ample opportunity to correct their situation. However, DB2 still is king and everything else is shite. Even in the Hadoop space, IBM still managed to fsck up their opportunity. I know for a fact that key people who came in through acquisitions will leave as soon as their gold plated handcuffs come off. All have a safe and happy Holidays, and please don't drink and drive. Just drink and use a car service. ;-) > From: peterpain@gmail.com > Subject: Re: Insights & trends > Date: Sat, 18 Dec 2010 06:28:43 -0800 > To: informix-list@iiug.org > > On Oct 23, 4:37 pm, Fernando Nunes <domusonl...@gmail.com> wrote: > > You explicitly wrote that this were probably people using Informix and > > trying to move away. > > Naturally, as usual, when confronted with logic that shows you're wrong you > > jump around like a lost rabbit, picking up other issues and subjects. > > Of course it means you accept the logic and everybody understands that.
