The answer is a rock solid "That Depends". If you are planning on an update-anywhere configuration, then the use of serials is highly unadvisable. However, if your East Coast machine is going to do all the database updates, and the West Coast machine is going to be used for reports only, then you have no issue. I also believe that the 'counter' is not increased when a row is inserted via replication. For example, East coast inserts row where serial column = 5 into west coast, west coast inserts serial column value 0, server assigns 1, not 6. THis was behaviour in 7.23 ....
