When you bring the engine up, there's usually an entry in the
message log indicating that KAIO is in use.
You can also do an onstat command and see if there are any kaio
threads in use. onstat -u or onstat -g ath should do it, I think.

Check your release notes. You generally have to enable it on the
system first by creating a /dev/async, or something similar. Then
set KAIOON=1. Again, check your release notes, cuz that's off
the top of my head. Finally, make sure you're using devices that
support asynchronous I/O--cooked files, for example, won't use it.
For raw devices, you want character-special, not block-special.

YMMV. My personal experience is about a 15% gain on HP-UX
systems. Others have run into bugs or complications where
performance has actually gone down. It's very easy to try it both
ways.
