Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
I'm using IDS 9.4 on Solaris.
I get error -9844 when I try:
create index ix_address_upper_name on address (UPPEr(name));
I don't understand why. If I can't use a function as simple as UPPER
in an index, then what good are functional indexes?

Hello Jeff,
i guess it's variant not sure!!.. >>check the manual
try:
create function myupper (a char(100))
returning char(100)
with (not variant)return upper(a);
end function;
create index ix_address_upper_name on address (myupper(name));
your qrys should look like
select * from address where myupper(name) = "SUPERBOER"
--then what good are functional indexes?
believe me they are great!!!
Superboer
