Chris, Sounds like your database and application code need tightening up. It's an acquired skill with a lot of aspects but some of the most important are: efficient use of indexes (which you can get an idea of by way of SET EXPLAIN ON, though the real bottlenecks won't jump out at you); efficient use of SQL (lots of little single-table queries all over the place are, to over-simplify somewhat, a definite no-no); efficient use of dynamic SQL (for which the best place to go for a good understanding is Chapter 6 of the manual 'Guide to SQL: Tutorial'). In my experience performance problems are in the way the database is designed and accessed in 99.9 of cases. Tightening up your code can often bring things down from from minutes (or hours!) to seconds. (My favourite was getting something from 22mins to 0.3 of a second by changing one word!) Mail me if you want to pursue this further. -Andy Kent-
