I am trying to write a client application which connects to the =
$INFORMIXSERVER database and if it cannot connect to it try and connect =
to the server listed in the DBPATH variable. However if the engine which =
is referenced by $INFORMIXSERVER is down and I attempt to connect to the =
database listed by the DBPATH I get a -908. This also happens when using =
"dbaccess". What am I missing or is what I am trying to do impossible? =
TIA

It appears that the primary server listed in $INFORMIXSERVER must
be up, even if the first thing you do is ignore it and connect to
somewhere else. If the system is listed in DBPATH is up, then you
could revise INFORMIXSERVER to point to the new (up) system before
trying to connect, couldn't you?
No, I've no idea why the primary $INFORMIXSERVER has to be up when
you do 'CONNECT TO 'dbase@some_other_server' -- I wish I knew.
