What's not is the fact that you have to do a lot of upfront work before you commence your first project, in setting up class libraries (or speak to David Harrison at, I think, mailto:dch@dchsoftware.co.uk ) You should be worried about a guy called Jeff Hudson who recently and unilaterally declared NewEra dead (he's the only person who said so, BTW) - Informix have subsequently announced that NewEra is 100% alive and in full enhancement mode. > I actually come from being an Oracle DBA so I can "speak database" > How does NewEra compare to something like using MS Access to develop > a front end for an Oracle7 DB in the back as attached tables? Access is strictly Mickey Mouse by comparison. Also, NewEra is a lot more work by comparison. :-) But the principle is similar. > Would somebody be able to take a bit of time and give me the gory > details? Sure. :-) Do not use the AFCL, except as a way of learning the tool. We used it initially to get through a Deathmarch Project (tm), but have largely re-written it and are going through the trauma of writing our own classes from scratch. There are those who think that Java is the way to go, but I'm not one of them... :-) Oh, yes, another nice thing is a *real* three-tier architecture, you're not just limited to NT. If you're supporting multiple databases, you might want to move all your apps to a decent ODBC compliant tool and using just that one tool. Funnily enough, NewEra fits the bill, but so do Delphi, PowerBuilder and (ugh) Visual Basic. HTH. -- Ciao, Billy Nose to the ear in Johannesburg -- Murder City never looked so good!
