losing Informix logs
Posted in 2005
After upgrading to IDS 9.40.FC5 (64-bit) on AIX 5.3, the online message log named by MSGPATH was being wiped roughly hourly. Cron jobs and other schedulers were ruled out, and some suspected a 9.40 bug. Others noticed the surviving file always started with a 'Logical Log N Complete' message, suggesting something reopened the file without append mode. Jonathan Leffler spotted that CONSOLE was set to the same file as MSGPATH; pointing CONSOLE at a different file (or /dev/null) and restarting the server fixed it.

I asked this last week, but I never got a reply so I'll try once more.
The Informix log file as specified by MSGPATH is being automatically
truncated on a regular (roughly hourly) basis - how can I prevent this?
I've looked through the manuals and can't find anything about this being
cleared automatically.
I've checked crontab for all users to make sure no one put something in
there to do this.
We recently upgraded to 9.40 (64-bit) and onbar from 7.31 (32-bit) and
ontape.
I'd really like to manage the log file myself
Hi,
there is no automatic clearing of the logfile from Informix - at least
we didn't see any changes when mgirating from IDS 7.x to IDS 9.40 on HP-UX.
Have you tried to change the name of the logfile and see if it happens again?
Has someone opened the logfile all the time (UNIX command fuser ) ?
Regards,
Andreas

Hello,
I am using 9.30 and the online log is not automatically truncated.
Is this a feature in 9.40? Did you check if other software such as
Vantage, TWS, Tivoli is
in used to execute that type of job.
Regards
Diane

Thanks
for everyone's replies.
I should have mentioned the platform we're running on (AIX 5.3) and the
exact Informix version (9.40.FC5).
One of the off-list repliers said they experienced the same thing when they
upgraded to 9.40 (he didn't specify the exact version) and that their DBA
has been "in contact with Informix and it is a bug" and that they're working
on a patch.
Truncation might not be the correct term either since it's clearing older
entries from the top of the file.
At this point I'm assuming it's a bug - I had already checked crontab and
only found the entry I put there to clean it on a weekly basis.
A couple people suggested I rename the log file, which I've done, but I
cannot bounce Informix until the weekend so it hasn't taken effect.

Call your tech support and get them to check all the crons. This is not
being truncated by Informix.

Danny-
I have a test system set up with IDS 9.40.FC6 on HP-UX 11.11.
It exhibits a similar behavior. I'm thinking one particular type of
message being written into the log is being sent with output to ">"
instead of append to ">>". You may want to see if a similar message
always appears at the top.

I think you're probably right about how it's happening.
We age the files on a weekly basis and keep the most recent 2, so I have 2
older copies to look at as well as the current copy and they all have
similar messages at the top of the file:
<<IBM Informix Dynamic Server>>> Logical Log 598 Complete, timestamp:
0xddc36c8.
That message only appears once in each of the files I have.
Thanks!

Those
messages normally end up in the console log, I think.
Do you have your console set to the same place as MSGPATH?
If so, change it to a different name - /dev/null or a separate file.
If I'm right, there's almost an incipient bug there; the console might well
be opened each time without an append mode since, for a real console, that
would not cause any trouble. Actually, it might not even be as incipient as
all that.

It looks
like you're right. I restarted informix over the weekend after
modifying MSGPATH, which was previously the same as CONSOLE and the problem
has gone away.
Thanks!
