Dear JD,
It's very important which versions of Informix you're running with NIS.
Our site had the following problem: We were using ONLINE 5.00 UC2 as
our engine and had ISQL 4.1 UD2 loaded also. We have eight workstations,
each with a ONLINE engine on them. Everything worked fine until we
started using NIS on our workstations. Everytime we tried to access the
database using ISQL Informix tried to read the local /etc/passwd file
instead of the NIS passwd file. It turns out that this is a Informix
bug. The problem was fixed by upgrading to ISQL 4.1 UE2.
I hope this info helps!
