Down Primary Chunks - Executable.

When we have a down primary chunk, we generally engage IBM to login and execute their down chunk steps and script to mark the chunks up/online. We have had them to perform this in the past and we have done so also, but not to this version of informix. We basically need the: 1. Steps/instructions to perform the process of marking the chunks online 2. The executable/script to run. We need it for IDS 7.30.UC3 on SunOS 5.6. Does anyone have a copy or where we can get a copy? We will take full responsibility for its affect whether good or bad. Thanks, ************************************** Ernie Knox Sears Holding Co. Ernie,
The correct way to get online a down chunk is to restore the dbspace it
belongs to (unless the chunk is mirrored , then mark it online with
onspaces)
When support marks up a chunk this may leave corruption in the chunk and
should be regarded as a restort when restore ain't possible.
If you can't restore , go ask IBM whether some service is possible (time
and material, as 7.30 is out of service .
Do not attempt to interfere with the disk structures yourself. Chances
are pretty high it does more harm then good.
And last but not least - upgrade to a supported IDS version and renew
maintenance .

Hi Ernie I'm agreed Tilman's said, the best way to resolve the problem is to restore the associated dbspace from a valid backup if your are not use mirror chunk. Because there are some risks in the process of resolve the issue by IBM's tools, so you can't do it by yourself whitout IBM technical engineer assistant. If you insist to do it, perhaps you will corrupt more pages. This can make the repair work more difficult.
Ernie, The executable you refer to is a proprietary tool developed by Informix for use by the Down Systems Group (DSD). Because of the inherent danger involved with marking down chunks online IBM's policy is to only allow certified IBM engineers use of the tool via remote access to a customer's machine. The DSD group I mentioned consists of some of the very best technical support engineers at IBM (or anywhere else for that matter)and can handle any down chunk situation you may encounter in a timely manner. I wanted to thank Paul Watson from Oninit for his quick response in helping us resolve our production problem. This application was on an unsupported version of Informix (IDS 7.30.UC3 on SunOS 5.6), and had experienced 9 down chunks. We ended our EOL extended support contract with IBM, which leaves us open for problems like this, but Paul was able to get in and quickly bring up the chunks and we were back in business. It took more time to get Paul access to our server, than it did for him to do the work needed. We are going to keep Paul at the top of our tool box of problem solving contacts. You have to trust someone sometime to get things resolved, so since Paul is on the list, we were able to allow him access on short notice. We are in the process of upgrade this application, but you know about workload, funding, resources, and other issues tend to intervene, we haven't been able to perform this task at the time of the problem. It would have taken a large amount of time acquiring hardware, installation, moving the data, and testing to go from one version to another upgraded version, which we did not have.
