IMNSHO every Informix OnLine site needs an administrator, from a part-time
requirement on small sites through to full-time DBAs on the large ones.
Alternativly, (I feel a sales pitch coming on) we recently introduced a
DBA service to enable our clients to outsource this function. But when
it comes to things like tape drives, you need a person to put the right
one in and label them as they take them out.
Ok, ok I know there are machines to do this as well (almost), but not for
small sites. Also there is onarchive, but again the smaller sites seem to
stick with ontape.
Let's face it, like most of the good utilities that Informix write, ontape
has ended up doing far more than it was every designed to do. This I have
no problem with. But when it becomes a threat to data integrity, then I
would draw the line.
Of course we would all like to hear the results of your discussions with
Informix on this subject.
Cheers,
