Last time I called Oracle tech support, it took three days for some clueless tech to get back to me with a lame suggestion followed by a recommendation that we upgrade. Sorry, life is too short for that. I've never had that sort of problem with Informix. Sure they suggest upgrades, but generally work with whatever release you've got. cheers j. > -----Original Message----- > From: Watson, Paul [mailto:Paul.Watson@aggregate.com] > Sent: Monday, February 12, 2001 9:58 AM > To: informix-list@iiug.org > Subject: RE: Informix free > > > >Last I checked, they weren't going to fix the PAM "bug" in 7.30 for > > >Linux. "Generally" is the key word here. Informix seems to treat their Linux ports as bastard step-children. In fact, I believe that I'd be trading bugs A, B, and C, for bugs D, E, and F if I upgrade. I don't honestly believe that they will treat their Linux ports any better if I throw more money at them. With Free/Open Source software, at least I can fix bugs myself or hire someone else to. It's not that I'm cheap, I just can't rationalize paying big bux for buggy, proprietary software and each inevitable "upgrade" (of course, consultants for companies that can are able to command enormous salaries for the voodoo that they do). I especially can't rationalize being forced to pay for *three* copies of a product when I only need one. -- Forte International, P.O.
