Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
A user connecting from Windows 2000 to Informix 7.25 on AIX via the 2.90.TC4 ODBC driver asked how to get "German" support. He set CLIENT_LOCALE de_de.CP1252, DB_LOCALE en_us.CP1252 and a translation DLL, but in Access umlauts (äöüß) appeared as [ ] { } \\ |. A respondent explained GLS only handles formatting and codeset conversion, not word translation, and noted CP1252-to-CP1252 means no conversion at all; he suggested verifying the locales, checking whether dbaccess shows the correct characters (i.e. what is actually stored), and whether the client application can display them. No resolution is recorded in the thread.

Hello,
I use the ODBC Driver 2.90 TC4 (server IBM AIX client Win2000 Box).
Everything works fine. But how can I make that the driver translates to
German language?
Thank you.

Hi,
You should be setting the required(in this case German) Client and DB
locale in the ODBC DSN/Connection string.
Thanks & Regards

Hi,
I set on the ODBC driver
client locale: de_de.CP1252
database locale: en_us.CP1252
Translation library:
C:\\Programme\\IBM\\Informix\\Client-SDK\\bin\\igo4n304.dll
Translation option: 0
but nothing happens
Thanks

Hi,
Please let us know what you're expecting to happen and what exactly
"nothing happens" means...
The GLS feature of Informix doesn't provide any language translating.
It is used to define how things are formatted and how to translate from
one codeset to another.
The first part of the of the GLS locale specifies regional information,
for example how Informix presents numbers and what the . (dot) means
(is it thousands separator or a decimal separator). The regional
information is the "en_us" and "de_de" part of the locales you've
specified.
The second part of the locale, the part you've specified as CP1252, is
the codeset or the character set used to store data. If the client and
database utilized different codesets, this part of the locale would be
what tells Informix what each letter is -- not what a word means.
So, the "Language Support" is really about how to format stuff and what
characters mean... it's not going to translate English words into
German.
Hope this helps you understand GLS a little better...
Hi,
I know that the GLS doesn´t translate words.
I also know what de_de.CP1252 means.
When I connect with Access to the Database I see the characters like
[,],{,},\\,| instead of ä,Ä,Ü,ü,ß,ö,Ö.
Thanks

OK,
CLIENT_LOCALE is de_de.CP1252
DB_LOCALE is en_us.CP1252
CP1252 = CP1252 = no translation
Since you wouldn't expect any character conversion, I'd then look at
the following 3 things:
1) Double check that you're using the correct locales.
2) Check to see that you have the correct characters in the database.
Can you select the rows through DBACCESS and get the characters you
expect? Can you select the data in any other way and get the
characters you expect?
3) Can the software you are using display the characters you are
expecting? I wouldn't think this would be a problem with the
characters you mention, I typically encounter such problems with
Japanese and Chinese characters...
