Yes, you can do the restore over the network using ontape -r. But just make
sure your onconfig TAPEDEV set to hostname:/dev/rmt/0 is set before the
restore.
"hostname" is the name of the host where the tape drive is physically
connected.

Subject: ontape to a tapedrive on a different server
I've been supporting our PowerBuilder applications using Informix
databases for about 3 years. I've had no dba training on any database
but I'm getting by. I use the google groups a lot to try to learn
something. Unfortunately, you often speak in a foreign
language...Informix!
Monday morning, we had a server crash in a power outage and weren't
able to recover it. Yes, it was on a UPS but something failed. I had
backup tapes but the tape drive in the server also broke...physically.
The server tech said the "leader" broke. In order to get the tape
out, the drive had to be destroyed. We found another drive that could
read the tape but it couldn't be connected to the server we were
rebuilding to replace the crashed server. One of my backup tapes was
the server backup. We restored that tape to a network server. I
copied the chunk files from the IFMXDATA folder on tape into the
IFMXDATA folder in the new install. That backup was from Friday
morning so the users lost all their work after Friday morning. I also
had a tape from an ontape -s -L 0 that was run Monday morning shortly
before the power outage. Is there anyway I could have run ontape -r
on the new server and have it get the backup from the remote tape
drive through the network?
Thanks for any help!
