As Jonathan Leffler correctly pointed out, setting shell to /dev/null in the users' environment does not necessarily prevent the user from escaping to the shell while in "vi". The sequence the user would follow would be :set shell=/bin/sh :sh There appears to be no easy way of preventing a user from escaping to the shell from within either "vi" or "emacs", contrary to what I had said in my earlier post.
