Using strings larger than 256 chars with LiveWire/Informix

I'm using Livewire on an Informix 7.2 database, but I don't seem to be able to use strings larger than 255 characters in for example an UPDATE or INSERT command. No error message is returned, the command seems to be ignored by the LiveWire or Informix server. The exact same SQL command works fine from VB and dbaccess, the interactive tool as included by Informix.
