Re: Help to Promote Linux!

Meanwhile Gary L. Burnore swatted flies in the barnyard, chewed on a piece of grass, and pondered the obvious. An artist nearby yawned while drawing a Far Side cartoon, probably something involving bar codes. Gary wrapped up his big day. -.- Chapter II The possibility of a port of Informix products to Linux is being seriously discussed at Informix, probably closer to reality than at any other time in the past 2 years. It has caught the attention of Menlo Park, not because Informix likes it, but because people like Mike, myself, and a whole bunch of others inside and outside Informix have been insisting Informix pay attention to it. The new president is well aware of the Linux desire at this point. Informix can recapture the small to mid-size business market once again, where it started out, and where it became the most successful, by porting to Linux. The Linux impact is staggering compared to any other OS out there, including NT. We've been insisting Informix port products to Linux for many reasons, a few which are: * Attractive Licensing - NO license cost for the OS * Source code availability - Customization of the kernel, and other tools are possible without restrictions * Worldwide Support - wide base of support, and rapid turnaround on fixes, and new tools. * Highly Efficient on x86 - Best UNIX on x86 cost/cpu * Multiple Plaforms - Runs on x86, Alpha, Sparkstations * Informix on UNIX - Allows the opportunity for small to midsize business operations to run Informix products on a competitive, alternative OS to NT, for less cost than NT. * Largest number of Web Servers use Linux - Informix's appeal to the web market can reach the largest market in web land Informix will benefit from Linux by: * Increasing mindshare of Informix products in the computing marketplace * Reaching a new market first before the competition * Satisfying the number one requested item from end users and developers * Allowing Informix Engines to run on one of the most efficient versions of UNIX available. * Rebuilding the developer support vital to the success of future sales * Leveraging the training of many of the new graduates from schools, many which have used Linux extensively in schools. Join our mailing list and talk about it. mailto:majordomo@iiug.org no subject body: subscribe linux-informix If you haven't tried Linux it's time to. And check out the survey at www.data.com . Mike Segel has been endorsed and enlisted by the IIUG- sanctioned Informix-on-Linux mailing list to help build a business case for Informix on Linux. Mike is attempting to reach the readers here and get them to contribute their interest in the form of responding to a survey. If you need to help Mike improve his writing, take it off line and email him directly. Informix is starting to see the light, maybe this survey will help them improve their vision. ( Unfortunately Informix didn't use this kind of thinking on New Era, or IUS--they could have saved a lot of effort and money! :-) Data D. is going to make the results of the survey data available to several software vendors, if I understand it correctly, to help them better understand what the Linux marketplace is all about. Many of the surveys to date have reached the free-software market, and not addressed the commercial desires of people wanting to use Linux. Personally I don't think a survey is necessary, but hey I could be wrong. I say they just need to go for it, and change the marketplace. Porting to Linux is going to change everything. And the stockholders won't have to take a bath for it either. Last week we found out that SCO ODS 7.23 *will* run on Linux 2.0.32, using IBCS. Some of the tools do not work, so imagine what would happen if it was a native port. Now that would be interesting. And probably quite profitable for everyone.
