Perhaps you don't have the permissions set right? We call another shell from within rc.local to start the db and to start the tbtape process. It runs as root to start the tbinit (maybe this is not *the way* to do this but it works for us) and su's to informix to start the tbtape process. The advantage of having it in a different script is that I can start the informix stuff w/o having to reboot the node. We also take the time in the script to move console files and logs to a backup file. This makes it easier to keep up with what has happened in this "run" of the db.
