Upgrade to 9.4

Hi, we have developed an application for a customer, using Informix 9.2 (9.21?) on a Solaris OS. Right now we are planning some upgrades which include an upgrade of the application servers as well as web server. To put it in other words, this would be the perfect time to upgrade also the database server. I would like to know if an upgrade of the database server to 9.4 is recommended and what the most remarkable changes between 9.2 and 9.4 are(performance?). A special point of interest is that the database is rather huge and is splitted between several chunks. Is informix now able to handle chunks larger than 2 GB? I am in the unconfortable position of not being an informix administrator but having to argue abaut the upgrade so any help is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance for every input and best regards, Michael
Yes, IDS 9.40 will handle chunk sizes larger than 2GBytes. Most of the key benefits of 9.40 are listed in this IBM spec sheet: http://www-3.ibm.com/software/data/informix/pubs/specsheets/ids-94.pdf, and other 9.40 stuff is available at http://www-3.ibm.com/software/data/informix/ids/ Most people seem to find that 9.40 delivers performance benefit. Our own tests, in an environment which has been affected by a quirk of IDS 9.21 index management, has shown a 10-15% performance improvement on 9.21->9.40, but this is in highly-intensive i/o, simple SQL operations: such a performance improvement would depend upon your own use of IDS, and would not necessarily approach these benchmark results. Should you upgrade? Well, do you need to improve performance from the engine? You said "[W]e are planning some upgrades ... this would be the perfect time to upgrade also the database server". Would it? In the risk-adverse world in which I operate, making a major system software change at the same time as an application upgrade would be far from perfect. But only you can really tell ......
