Variable Character Field

Greetings. We'd like to create a Variable Length Character field in isql, unfortunatly we have SE (5.05.UC1) and all docs say it can't be done. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this? (I looked at using a BLOB of characters, but not too seriously). Thanks, Joseph
