You would get a third party archive solution like Legato Networker (or
others) that support the XBSA archiving interface that Informix adheres
to.
Most of these are capable of reading multiple parallel input streams
from
the IDS server and of writing to multiple storage devices on the
backside.
IDS supports this through the onbar archive tool but not with ontape.
BTW,
you do not have to make your archives during off times when users are
not
online. IDS was designed around making consistent archives while fully
online and in active use. There is some impact on user performance and
on
the archive times but it's relatively minor.
